3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeled buggy is perfect for off-roading and provides the most comfortable ride for infants. They can also be easier to push and maneuver than a four-wheeler, especially if they have fabric slings or modular seat units that are positioned perfectly in the frame, offering the best ergonomics and weight distribution.
Stability
Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, making them a great choice for off-road walking (especially when they are equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have larger front wheels, which cope well with bumps and kerbs as well as rough terrain. Some even feature a lockable front tire to give extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.
It's worth bearing in mind that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels and this can mean that they topple over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs have been designed with perfect geometry to ensure they remain steady in any weather. They should be able turn at a whim and be easy to steer using one hand. They also feature an incline of 360o for the front wheel which makes them perfect for maneuvering over difficult terrain.
For extremely difficult surfaces you should look for models with air-filled tyres also known as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to work on non-paved tracks and are able to deal with rocks, mud, and more. A lot of all-terrain buggies have an swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked to provide added stability when tackling very rough terrain.
A three-wheeled stroller is a great choice for runners and those who enjoy walking fast uphill. This is particularly true if you intend to connect to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that reclines flat and features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's lightweight and compact, and is suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used in conjunction with a car seat or a carrycot. It can also be used for jogging with a light pace, but is not intended for serious runners.
Weight
If you're seeking a buggy that can tackle difficult terrain, then you should select one with large tires. They will be able to handle cobbles, grass, and dirt tracks while providing the smoothest ride for anyone. They are also great for jogging because they come with built-in suspension and are able to climb up and down kerbs. However, the drawback is that they can be quite heavy to push.
The best 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels and an swivel wheel lockable to the front making it extremely maneuverable. It has air tyres that require occasional pumping and can hold a child up to the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat and was able to steer it easily with her 3-year-old in the seat.
Another great option is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar as well as a hood that is of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It is also easy to move kerbs upwards and downwards, and can fit into small car boot. It can also be used as a stroller and a carrycot for newborns or toddlers.
Fabric slings are positioned inside the frame and not on top as modular seats. This design delivers a lower center of gravity at the perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you can never overestimate the amount of times you'll have to do this as a new parent!)

Seating
The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is quite impressive and there are many different options to pick from. The carrycot included is ideal for a newborn (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfy and cozy lying-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older babies and toddlers will appreciate the spacious and comfortable seat unit with adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to fully recline, but they can be adjusted to the lowest position. This should still give your child plenty of space and headroom.
A fabric sling seat is also available, which has the advantage of being placed snugly within the frame instead of on top like an open-back seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. 3 wheel double buggy makes it much easier and lighter to push, especially over bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath loved the way this type of seat handled these obstacles.
This type of buggy has a large basket and other beneficial features like an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal, and some unique visibility lights which can be put in front of the occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.
If you're searching for a stroller that can grow with your family it's the sport(tm), a world-first, can accommodate a newborn and then be modified to accommodate three or four children as they grow, all in one footprint.
Stores
The 3-wheeled frame is more stable and can be pushed with one hand. It's also more suitable for difficult terrain. However, it does mean that the shopping basket can't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.
A top-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It should also be equipped with car seats and a carrycot so you can use it from the time you are born.
MFM's reviewers have noticed that the 3-wheeler frame doesn't pass through all doors in their homes, or small car booties - make sure to check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before purchasing for those who are concerned about space.
It's worth looking for 3-wheelers that can accommodate 2 (or even 3!) This is the best choice for your future and can save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the best of these and can be used as a single from day dot and then converts into twin buggies once your baby begins walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres have been designed to provide your child with more comfort while riding by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. You'll find these on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also mentioned that the grippy tires of the Phil & Ted's Sport made it easier for her to maneuver around the kerbs and other obstacles.
They can be difficult to maintain and need to be filled regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, so it is recommended to always carry a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube when you're out and about.
PU tyres can be found on a lot more pushchairs than air-filled tyres but they're still as durable. You can recognise PU tyres by their matte appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide across flat and tidy surfaces.
If you move your hand over the tyres, you can determine if they're PU or rubber. If it feels like it is sliding then it's a rubber or PU. You can also verify whether your buggy has PU tyres simply by sliding the tyres over flat, clean surfaces They'll be able to roll easily and fit comfortably in their wheel hubs.
Foam tyres can handle the rough terrain of high-performance buggies. This can make your buggy less stable because the foam loses its springy feel. These tyres are also noisy, as they make a lot noise when you turn or drive around the town.
